2021 PFDA District Meetings CE Program Descriptions:

First Program
: Difficult Case Embalming & Soft Tissue Repair of Face – (2.0 CEs)

Presented by Wallace P. Hooker
, CFSP, MBIE
Owner, Funeral Director & Embalmer, Family & Friends Funeral Home, Wingate, IN
-> Read Wally's Bio <-

This presentation will review the importance of quality body preparation and feature positioning. Topics addressed during the first hour include “pre-embalming analysis.” This simple, yet all-important step, can be the difference between a successful embalming and a failure. We must become proficient in allowing the body to direct us as we begin our technical embalming. We will discuss in detail, various challenges/complications that will require us to pull out all the stops to “do it right.” We will also cover: Edema, jaundice, renal failure, cardiac events, drug overdoses, tissue gas, donor cases and autopsied cases. Special emphasis will be placed on chemical selection, injection sites, pressure/rate of flow, and topical treatments.

The second hour will cover “Soft Tissue Repair and Restorative Efforts of Face & Head.” During this portion of the program, we will cover several traumatic injury “case studies,” including other situations we routinely see in our embalming rooms. We will study, step by step, the procedures, techniques, and restorative efforts to ensure acceptable “open casket” results. Q&A will be encouraged throughout as we provide graphic images to demonstrate the techniques and products used.

Second Program: Decreasing Customer Loyalty: The Problem Isn’t What You Think – (1.0 CE)

Presented by Jeff “Stewy” Stewart
Regional Sales Vice President for the Atlantic Region, Funeral Directors Life
-> Read Stewy's Bio <-

Funeral professionals can no longer take customer loyalty for granted. Many funeral directors feel like they are losing ground to cremation and other non-traditional sources of competition. Most funeral professionals are blaming the changing funeral consumer for declining loyalty, but the REAL problem is much closer to home. During this eye-opening presentation, participants will learn the true reason for declining customer loyalty and take away actionable steps to rebuild customer loyalty and grow their businesses.

 In this program, we will:

  1. Discuss the biggest challenges facing our profession and the impact on the business.
  2. Define the problem of declining customer loyalty in terms of the changing characteristics of the funeral consumer.
  3. Define loyalty and what this means to the funeral consumer and to the funeral home.
  4. Explain the “empathy paradox” and change.
  5. Explore how to build lasting loyalty and provide value through an understanding of the realized and unrealized needs of today’s funeral consumer.
