IMPORTANT - Requirement to Report the Death of a Veteran - ACT 42
On July 20, 2026 Governor Shapiro signed Act 42 into law. This act requires funeral homes to report the death of a Veteran to the County Director of Veterans Affairs within 96 hours of the Veterans death. It also requires the funeral home to provide the Veterans next of kin with contact information for the County Director of Veterans Affairs. PFDA has worked with a team to ensure there is a standardized method for reporting the deaths of Veterans in Pennsylvania. A fillable form has been created and should be used to report the passing of any Veterans your funeral home is serving. Making a copy of the completed form and giving it to the next of kin will satisfy the requirement to provide contact information for the County Director of Veterans Affairs. The following links will provide you access to the form used to report the death of a Veteran and to a document explaining Veteran's benefits that may be available at the Federal, State, and County levels. Both of these forms will also be available at www.pfda.org. The requirement to report the death of a Veteran and to provide the next of kin of the Veteran with the contact information for the County Director of Veterans Affairs will begin tomorrow, September 18, 2026.
