Richard Alvin "Dick" Teeter, age 86, of Hawley passed away on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Anne (Rose) Teeter.
Born January 30, 1940, in Honesdale, Dick was the son of the late Richard A. and Helen K. (Killam) Teeter. A lifelong Hawley resident, he was a graduate of Hawley High School, Class of 1958. A Lehigh University graduate, Class of 1962, he was an active member of Theta Xi Fraternity, Eta Chapter, and remained an active alumni member, acting as Reunion Chairperson for many years. Following his graduation from Lehigh, he attended Eckels College of Mortuary Science, graduating in 1963.
Dick and Mary Anne married on June 23, 1962. They began their life together in Hawley, where he became co-owner of Teeters' Funeral Chapel and Teeters' Furniture in 1965, and he and his brother J. Kimble began their tenure as the 4th generation operating the family business. He continued to work in the family businesses for the rest of his life, never retiring even at age 86.
Dick was committed to bettering his community and remained a volunteer throughout his lifetime. He was a Founding Director (1972) and Treasurer of the Wallenpaupack Area Medical Foundation. He was a former Director, past President and Treasurer of the Hawley-Lake Wallenpaupack Chamber of Commerce, Founding Member and former Treasurer of the Hawley Merchants Committee, now known as the Downtown Hawley Partnership.
A lifelong and active member of Hawley United Methodist Church, he was a member of the Finance Committee and former Chair of the Church Council. Dick was a 12- year member of the Hawley Boro Council, serving as President for many of those years. He was the former Chair of the Hawley Planning Commission, where he served for 10 years.
In his free time, Dick indulged his passion for his 1949 Hudson Commodore, which he acquired in 1992. He was extremely active with the International Hudson-Essex-Terraplane Club, a Director of both HET Club and HET Historical Society, was former editor of the Hudsoning column in the White Triangle News, and was a member of the Pennsylvania Dutch, Garden State and New England Chapters.
Dick has been honored with several awards in recent years as recognition of his lifetime of service and commitment to his community. He was named 2024 Businessperson of the Year by the Chamber of the Northern Poconos, 2025 Grand Marshall of the Hawley Independence Day Parade and was the recipient along with his wife Mary Anne of the 2025 Wayne County Community Foundation Ben Franklin Award.
Dick loved to travel, especially cruising, and enjoyed many "trips of a lifetime" around the United States, the Caribbean and Europe. He also enjoyed photography and was an avid fan of Lehigh University sports, especially wrestling.
He deeply loved and was immensely proud of his family, especially his seven grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, Dick is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law: Mary Helen and Randy Schmalzle of Blooming Grove, Julie and Richard Seiler of Hawley, and Jen and Michael Peifer of Greentown; one brother: James Kimble Teeter and his wife Candance of Hawley; and seven grandchildren: Corey Schmalzle and his wife Bea Dybuncio, Ty Schmalzle and his partner Lacey Bishop, Corine Connolly and her husband Dan, Wyatt Peifer, Eli Peifer, Rebecca Seiler, and Roland Jordan Seiler; and his beloved and incorrigible pup: Schatzi.
Calling hours will be Monday, Sept. 28, from 3 to 7 PM at Teeters' East Chapel, 505 Church St, Hawley, PA. Services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Hawley United Methodist Church, 325 Church St., Hawley, with visitation from 10 to 11 AM with the funeral at 11 AM with Rev. Andrew Weidner officiating. Burial will be in Green Gates Cemetery, Hawley, following the funeral.
